Aurora Borealis Over Portland Head Light

Nighttime view of the Portland Head Light, with the Northern Lights illuminating the sky in green, purple, and red hues.

On a clear Maine night, the northern lights appeared above Portland Head Light, sweeping across the sky in shades of green and violet. I stood on the rocks at Cape Elizabeth, watching the colors shift and fade while the lighthouse stood still beneath them. The air was cold and perfectly calm, the kind of night that reminds you how rare and beautiful quiet can be.

This photograph brings together everything I love about the Maine coast — the strength of the ocean, the history held in its lighthouses, and the unexpected moments when nature gives you something unforgettable.
