On a clear Maine night, the northern lights appeared above Portland Head Light, sweeping across the sky in shades of green and violet. I stood on the rocks at Cape Elizabeth, watching the colors shift and fade while the lighthouse stood still beneath them. The air was cold and perfectly calm, the kind of night that reminds you how rare and beautiful quiet can be.
